For winter quarter of my junior year at Stanford, I decided to enroll in Design 170— which is a class focusing on brand design, in particular building a brand out of style exploration, user experience design, and graphics design.

We were tasked with one simple mission: Build whatever you want in one quarter.

I decided to make a lifelong dream project of mine a reality: creating a nightlife and art space for queer people in Hanoi, Vietnam.

An issue that I was noticing in my hometown was the lack of spaces for queer people to freely exist and just be themselves. I wanted to create a nightclub and cafe that celebrates queerness, playfulness, and art for my community.

The Challenge

The lack of designated queer community spaces in Vietnam creates challenges for queer people to find places where they can have fun and be safe.

How do we create a brand that celebrates fun, community, creativity, and queerness while also incorporating Vietnamese elements and traditions?

What I’m Doing Now (Next)

For this project, I was excited about exploring the idea of queerness, music, and the idea of using joy as resistance in marginalized communities. I've been interested in nightlife and music serving as means of community building and safe spaces for a long time, and I want to explore the idea of space as such in my home of Hanoi, Vietnam. My idea is to form a club and art space dedicated to queer and gender-marginalised people.

In Vietnamese, the word “quậy” means to have fun without a care in the world. The word to me represents a carefree and playful energy, so I decided to name the project as such.

After coming up with the name for my brand, my next task was to design a logo.

In creating this, I wanted to combine elements that are traditionally Vietnamese (such as the fan, the nón lá, or famous landmarks) but also represent the new, playful nature of the brand. I hand-drew the logos and then proceeded to vectorize them in Figma.

I decided to settle on two different logos— representing night and day—since Quậy is a space that operates both as a nightclub and a cafe/art space. I explored further with playful colors and elements, such as making the nón lá (Vietnamese traditional hat) as an accent mark.

In the following weeks, I’m aiming to add interactions and other pages to the website design for both the mobile and desktop versions and refine the website even more.

I want to also showcase this project to my communities back home and hopefully one day, it’ll become a reality.
